How to prevent blisters at the feet

Stop Blisters on Feet If you already have blisters on your feet you can read this link to treat them and heal. However, by taking precautions to prevent and counteract this common problem, you can immediately avoid the formation of painful boils on your feet.

Choose the appropriate footwear

1) Choose the shoes of the correct size.
They should not be too tight, but not too big.
The shoes of the right size leave 6 mm of space between the longest finger (which does not necessarily have to be the big toe) and the tip of the footwear.
Try walking a bit with your new shoes, before deciding to buy them, to make sure they fit properly and are comfortable.
The shoes with a rounded or square tip offer the best comfort and the most comfortable fit.
It is important to try the shoes before buying them even if you know the size, as this may vary depending on the brand. Take those that are more comfortable, even if they are of a different size from the one you normally wear.
Your feet can swell up to 8% more during the day, so you should consider buying them in the afternoon when your feet are bigger. By choosing shoes that fit properly when your feet are swollen, you will avoid blistering altogether.

2) Do not put on footwear that favours blistering.
If they squeeze their feet too much, if they are too loose or if they make you walk abnormally, causing pressure and friction, they can lead to blistering. You should avoid this type of shoes, including:
High-heeled shoes, especially if the space for the fingers is reduced. These force the fingers to assume uncomfortable positions that cause cramps put pressure on the forefoot, increase friction on the heel and othER.

3) Gradually start to adapt the shoes to the shape of the foot.  14 JUNE 2018

Before wearing new shoes for long periods, wear them only for short periods. For example, before wearing new shoes all day, keep them for a couple of hours at home. In this way, the material has all the time to conform to the exact shape of the foot and you will feel more comfortable.
This process is especially important when it comes to shoes used for sports and for intensive use, such as trekking boots, which must “soften” before being used normally.

4) Choose the correct socks.
Those in cotton absorb moisture; this fibre helps to keep the odour under control, but the friction caused by the wet tissue increases the likelihood of bladder formation. You should instead opt for wool socks or synthetic breathable fabric that dries quickly.
You can find specific reinforced socks for sports and trekking in sporting goods stores. These models can avoid blistering.
Some people prefer to wear two pairs of socks to combat moisture and friction: a thin and breathable pair covered by another more often.

5) Put the insoles comfortable and able to support the foot.
In shoe stores and in some pharmacies you can find different models of insoles to be included in footwear to get more support and comfort.
When you buy shoes to make sure you get those from the removable insole, so you can replace it with a more comfortable and better arch support, depending on your needs.
You can choose neoprene (foam rubber), latex memory foam, gel or other materials.
Some research has shown that neoprene, in particular, is able to reduce the incidence of blisters.
The insoles, especially the orthopaedic ones, are available in different models to offer comfort to the different types of feet. Try different shapes until you find the right ones for your shoes and your foot.                      9 MAY 2018

6) Change shoes often.
For example, you should not always wear the same pair for several consecutive days; you should instead try to alternate with another pair or two. Wearing different models, you can prevent the formation of bladders due to the fact that the feet do not undergo friction and friction always at the same points.

7) Keep your feet dry.
Choose footwear that is waterproof but breathable at the same time. In this way you avoid retaining moisture, allowing the sweat to evaporate and get away from the feet.
The plastic and nylon shoes prevent the feet from breathing properly; you should opt for footwear in leather, canvas, mesh or other breathable materials.
If your shoes or socks get wet, you should remove them as soon as possible. Leave them to dry well before wearing them again; also wipes your feet, then wears socks and dry and fresh shoes.

Preventing Attrition

8) Make sure that no residues remain in socks or shoes.
If there is any foreign material, such as sand or twigs, it can cause friction when walking and causing blisters. Wearing appropriate footwear can prevent this from happening.
If you feel the presence of something that should not be in the shoe or stocking, stop and take it off immediately.

9) Use a lubricant.
If you are rather vulnerable to blistering on certain parts of your feet, you should cover these more sensitive areas with a lubricant before putting on socks and shoes. Among the best solutions there are:
Talcum powder;
Ointment for the feet;
Ointment against irritations.

10) Wrap the sensitive parts of the foot with adhesive tape.
Put a little ‘adhesive material on the areas of the foot that tend to suffer friction, in this way the protectors and avoid the formation of blisters. If possible, choose salvapelle patches found in pharmacies, rather than adhesive tape (because it loses its adhesion capacity when it becomes wet).
Cut a slightly larger patch of patch more than the friction area.
Remove the film on the back to expose the adhesive side.
Press the patch on the foot, smoothing the folds from the centre to the edges.
Wear socks and shoes.

11) Strengthen the skin by stimulating its resistance.
If you gradually increase the duration of walking, running or hiking, the skin on your feet starts to get stronger; in this way, it is possible to prevent the formation of bladders.

12) Be prepared when walking.
The rather demanding walks may require a greater effort to the feet that will have to move for long distances in footwear less comfortable than the usual ones. You can prevent the blisters from forming by following the advice below. In particular:
Make sure you have properly softened the material of the boots and that your feet are well positioned inside them;
He wears two pairs of socks. A thinner pair of synthetic material to reduce friction and another pair of material other than cotton, with absorbent properties, such as wool, which helps to keep moisture away and keep your feet dry.

Keep those parts of the foot particularly susceptible to bladders hydrated and soft. Also, bring a lubricating product with you, in case of blisters start to form during the excursion.
Apply a skin-saving patch to the points of greatest friction. Always bring some with you, in case you need to provide additional protection to the feet during the walk.
