How to Treat Puffy Eyes
Do you get up every morning with puffy eyes? If you are tired of having a look that looks sleepy, there are many things you can do to revitalize your eyelids. Continue reading to learn about some quick fixes and long-term techniques to solve the problem.
1) Drink a lot of water.
The eyes swell because of water retention, in turn, generated by a high concentration of salt in the periocular area. If you had a very salty dinner the night before or you cried before going to sleep, you might notice bags under your eyes the next morning. Drinking lots of water help you cleanse and reduce swelling.
On days when the situation is worse, drink throughout the day, so you stay well hydrated.
Avoid taking substances that tend to dehydrate like caffeine and alcohol.
2) Apply something cold.
Since the swelling is an accumulation of fluid in the tissues, cold compresses help. You can put slices of cold cucumber, which are also the perfect size for your eyes. Lie down and place them on the closed eyelids for 15 minutes or until they have become warm.
If you do not have a cucumber handy, wipe the tea bags and put them in the freezer for 15 minutes. Even in this case, lie down and proceed to the pack for 15 minutes.
If you want an alternative that creates less mess, lay two teaspoons of metal after cooling them in the fridge.
3) Apply an astringent.
You can buy specific creams and tonics to reduce bags under the eyes and to firm the skin. Dampen two cotton pads with the cream or tonic, lie down, close your eyes and apply the discs for 10 minutes. In the end, rinse your face.
Sliced strawberries are believed to help smooth and firm the skin.
4) Try the potatoes.
They seem to have natural astringent components.
Raw potatoes peel. Cut it in half and put each half on the closed eyes for 10 minutes. The tuber cools the eyes and decreases the swelling.
Try the grated potatoes. Simply grating them and apply them still fresh on the eyes for 15 minutes. In the end, rinse your face.
5) Do some exercise.
This improves circulation and disrupts fluid stagnation. If you have time, take a ride, practice yoga or just take a quick walk.
6) Get enough sleep.
If you have bags under your eyes all day, it may simply be a sign that you do not sleep enough or sleep badly. The swelling of the ocular zone is a common symptom of sleep deprivation, trying to rest at least 7-8 hours a night.
7) When you sleep, keep your head higher than your body.
It is not unusual to have bags under your eyes when you wake up; a possible explanation is that the lying position followed by a rapid elevation causes the stagnation of liquid to fall downwards. To reduce this effect, put an extra cushion under the head so that the fluids do not accumulate too much under the eyelids.
If you sleep on your stomach, try changing your position and resting on your back. Those who sleep in the prone position are more likely to have swollen eyes because liquids are concentrated there.
If you sleep on your side, you may notice that one eye is more swollen than the other. Try changing sides or sleeping on your back.
8) Touch your face gently.
The eyelid skin is very fragile and can be ironed or damaged if you expose it to chemical agents or handle it aggressively. To prevent tissue laxity and the consequent accumulation of liquids try to touch your face with more attention.
Do not use aggressive chemicals to wash your face. Use a mild and delicate detergent.
Do not rub or rub the eyes to remove the makeup; use a specific cleansing milk.
Do not rub your eyes with a towel. Spray the water on your face and blot dry.
Use a moisturizer for the eyelids and the eye contour.
9) Take care of your allergies.
Swollen eyes, often, are caused by allergies that inflame the tissue of the face and allow the stagnation of liquids. You will notice a certain difference if you adequately care for your seasonal allergies with the right medications.
Try an over-the-counter medicine or contact your doctor for a prescription.
Make sure the house is free of all allergens such as dust and animal hair. Change the air conditioning filters and wash the laundry often.
10) Make healthy changes in your diet.
Do you eat a lot of salt at dinner? This is one of the main causes of swelling since salt induces water retention. If every night you go to sleep with a high amount of salt in the body, the skin of the eyes becomes less firm and filled with liquids. Set new and healthy habits immediately:
Use less salt when you cook. First, try to halve the quantities and then try to reduce them as much as possible.
Do not eat out too often. You can not control the salt doses in restaurant food, and they usually use it much more than you think.
Avoid all salty foods such as potato chips, peanuts, pretzels, canned soups and any other sodium-rich foods.
Make snacks with bananas or grapes, both decrease water retention.
Drink cranberry or cabbage juice. Both are diuretics and help you “get rid of” excess fluid. Do not use caffeine as a diuretic drink because it interferes with sleep.
11) Decrease alcohol.
It prevents your body from eliminating fluids and therefore promotes water retention. Limited to 1-2 drinks no more than a couple of times a week. Overcoming these doses causes the skin of the face to lose its elasticity.
12) Check if you have a basic condition that causes bags under the eyes.
Sometimes the swelling is a symptom or side effect of another disorder. Follow the medical treatments for your systemic illness, to get benefits also to the eyes. Here are some of these conditions/pathologies:
Hormonal fluctuations linked to the menstrual cycle.
Dermatitis (sensitive skin swells more easily).
Mononucleosis (the swelling around the eyes is one of the first symptoms).
Taking drugs (swelling and water retention could be side effects).
Very serious diseases.
If you’ve done all the medical checks and there are no problems, the swelling is just an aesthetic issue. It can happen with age and in other cases, it just happens. Learn to draw attention to other parts of the body that can not be affected by age, such as eye colour, curly hair or your character.
14) Undergo a blepharoplasty.
It is the last resort and it is the surgical removal of fat deposits under the eyelids followed by laser treatment for the skin. The end result is a firmer appearance and the definitive reduction of the swelling. It is a very expensive remedy (thousands of euros) and requires a period of convalescence of several weeks.
Drink plenty of water before going to bed and after getting up.
Gently massage the area around the eyes to promote fluid circulation.
Wet some tissues in water and put them in the freezer. After 20 minutes, remove them and put them under the eyes.
There is another remedy to get rid of this swelling. Take a glass of warm water and add half a teaspoon of salt. Make sure the water is not too hot. Dip a cotton ball into the saline solution and apply it on the eyelids for a couple of minutes. Repeat the procedure for a maximum of half an hour. After a while, the swelling will be gone.
