How to Treat Ocular Dryness

If you need it more often during the day, look for an eyewash without preservatives.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is the most common active ingredient for treating dryness and ocular irritation, followed closely by carboxymethyl cellulose. 4) Book an eye exam.
If you’ve tried over-the-counter or prescription eye drops but still suffer from severe eye dryness, go to the eye doctor. Once the specialist has determined the cause of the disorder, he will prescribe other treatments.
If you experience pain and discomfort such as tingling, burning or blurred vision, consult the ophthalmologist.
5) Use an ophthalmic ointment.
The specialist may prescribe this medication. Contrary to artificial tears, which treat the symptoms of dryness, the ointments are medicated to go and act on the cause of the disorder.
Ophthalmic ointments can also give you relief thanks to their lubricating action. They are useful for prolonged periods when you can not apply artificial tears (for example, while you sleep).
6) If necessary, undergo a surgical operation to apply a punctum plug into the lacrimal duct.
You may indeed need more permanent or invasive treatment. Your doctor may suggest you insert devices into the lacrimal ducts; these block the drainage of the tears so that the eyes maintain a good lubrication.

7) Cauterize the lacrimal ducts.
If a punctum plug has been applied to the lacrimal ducts but still accuses severe ocular dryness, the specialist may suggest that you cauterize them. Once the ophthalmologist has approved the surgery, you will have to undergo some examinations and the operation.
Remember that the results of the surgery could vanish over time. At that point, you would need to repeat the operation or choose another technique to treat the eyes again. The cauterization of lacrimal ducts is a reversible intervention.
Preventing Ocular Dryness
8) Prevent the evaporation of water from the eyes.
Dry eye cannot be completely cured, but there are some preventative methods that can make treatment more effective. Just like any other type of liquid, tears also evaporate when exposed to air. Here’s how to keep your eyes hydrated:
Do not expose them directly to the air (for example, to heat the machine, to the hair dryer and to the air conditioning).
At home, keep the environment humid, with a humidity level between 30 and 50%.
In winter, use a humidifier to prevent air from being too dry at home.
9) Wears glasses.
When you go out during the day, put on your sunglasses. If you intend to swim, use the goggles. You can also get yourself prescribed moist room glasses, which promote hydration in the eye area.
10) Do not irritate the eyes.
Avoid smoking, since smoking can dry out quickly and cause many other health problems. Also, do not rub your eyes. This prevents the passage of bacteria from the fingers and nails to the eye area.
11) Hydrate your eyes.
Use artificial tears and drops to keep them lubricated and hydrated. You can also use ointments, longer lasting eye drops. In any case, they can dirty the eyes due to their viscous consistency and cloud the eyes. You should only apply them before going to sleep.
To prevent dry eyes, apply eye drops before performing activities that are difficult for vision, not after. Try blinking often. This helps to shed tears or drops more evenly.
12) Reduce the salt in your diet.
Dry eye can be caused by excessive consumption of salt. You can easily check if this is the case, especially when you wake up at night to go to the toilet. If you have dry eyes, drink about 350 ml of water. See if this gives you immediate ocular relief. In this case, reduce the amount of salt in your diet and maintain optimal hydration.
