How to Relieve Pain and Itching in the Eyes
Eye itching is usually caused by allergies that irritate the area. However, it is also a symptom typical of conjunctivitis and ocular fatigue. If you experience much pain or fear that there may be an infection, see your doctor as soon as possible. However, if you have read and itchy eyes without any signs of infection, there are some remedies to alleviate the disorder.
Manage Possible Allergies
1) Apply cold compresses.
If your eyes are itchy and irritated, try to rest a cold compress. This remedy is also useful in cases of redness and swelling. Take a soft cloth or towel, immerse it in cold water and wring it out. Close your eyes, tilt your head back and place the compress on your face. Leave it for 20 minutes and repeat the treatment as often as you need to prevent itching.
You can also lie down if you feel pain in your neck by staying with your head reclined.
2) Wash your eyes.
If they make you feel uncomfortable, you can wash them. This procedure is necessary if there are allergen particles (such as dust) in the eye. To do the washing, lean over a sink and open the lukewarm water tap. Bring your face under a gentle stream of water (not violent!). Stay in this position for a few minutes or until you are sure you have eliminated the allergens.
You can also do this while you are in the shower if you have trouble bending over the sink. Just check that the water is not too hot to avoid damaging the eye.
3) Put eye drops.
There are two types of over-the-counter medicines that you can use. You can try antihistamine eye drops, ie drugs that fight the allergic reaction and give relief from itching and redness. There are also artificial tears or humectants. These are able to reduce the sensation of itching by hydrating the eyes and “washing” with any allergens.
The most famous brands of antihistamine eye drops are Alfa, Imidazole, while among the artificial tears we recall Dacriogel, Cellufresh and Dropstar TG.
You can also ask your doctor to prescribe a stronger antihistamine eye drops, such as Opatanol. However, most experts believe that over-the-counter solutions are sufficient for mild and moderate cases. 15 MAY 2018

3) Do not rub your eyes.
If you have to itch, rubbing your eyes is the worst thing you can do, because you do nothing but aggravate the symptoms. Also, apply unnecessary pressure and friction on the already irritated surface. This action allows you to transfer to the eyes the allergens you have on your hands worsening itching.
Do not touch your eyes for any reason. This means that you cannot apply make-up when you have an allergic crisis.
4) Protect your eyes.
If the allergens of the external environment are causing you much trouble, wear sunglasses when you leave the house. In this way interposes a barrier between the eyes and the allergens of the external world, reducing their exposure.
You can wear glasses even while cleaning. If you know you are allergic to dust and animal fur, wear protective goggles while cleaning your home.
Do not touch your eyes immediately after stroking your pet, if its fur and its dandruff trigger allergic reactions.
5) Remove contact lenses.
When the eyes are irritated, the presence of LAC does nothing but worsen the situation, because it creates friction on the cornea and on the conjunctiva. Moreover, they can get dirty with the allergens increasing the intensity of the immune response. In these cases, you should wear glasses to give the eyes a rest. Furthermore, the glasses represent a physical barrier against pollutants.
If you do not have glasses, switch to disposable contact lenses. In this way, you avoid the accumulation of allergens.
Remember to wash your hands well before wearing contact lenses or removing them. Avoid unnecessarily spreading the substances you are sensitive to.
6) Try a bench top antihistamine.
Eye allergies are often triggered by the same substances that trigger allergic rhinitis. These include dust, mould, animal dandruff and pollen. Since it is always the same cause, you can take an antihistamine in the free sale to alleviate eye symptoms.
You can take drugs that do not create drowsiness during the day, such as loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine and cetirizine (Zyrtec).
Benadryl is also very effective, but it causes drowsiness.
7) Recognize the symptoms.
Conjunctivitis is another common cause of eye itching. If you only feel itchy, it is very unlikely that you have conjunctivitis. However, if this symptom is accompanied by other manifestations, then you may suffer from this eye disease. Here’s what you need to pay attention to:
Presence of liquid secretion that can be white, transparent or yellow;
The sensation of a foreign body.
8) Go to the ophthalmologist.
Conjunctivitis can be both viral and bacterial and is very contagious in the first two weeks of infection. You need to be treated as soon as possible to limit the risks of transferring the infection to others. Furthermore, the symptoms will disappear first with timely therapy. Go to the ophthalmologist as soon as you show the first symptoms of conjunctivitis.
The doctor checks your eyes and determines the type of infection that has affected you. If you think there may be a serious problem, you may need to take additional tests.
9) Take antibiotics.
If the ophthalmologist has diagnosed you with bacterial conjunctivitis, then he will give you antibiotics that will reduce the course of the disease from a few weeks to a few days. However, antibiotics have no effect on viral conjunctivitis.
10) Try home remedies.
There is no cure for the viral infection. Your doctor may prescribe antiviral drugs if the infection is caused by particular viruses. You can follow the simple home remedies described here for all types of conjunctivitis, not just viral ones. For example, do not wear contact lenses, apply cold compresses, do not rub eyes and limit contact with hands.
Alleviate Ocular Fatigue Pain
11) Recognize the symptoms.
When the eyes are tired, it is quite normal for them to be wary. In fact, fatigue is a cause of itching, pain or sensation of ocular fatigue. You may also experience difficulty focusing, tearing or sensitivity to bright light.
Go to the ophthalmologist immediately in case of double vision. Prolonged ocular fatigue may be a sign of another problem and you should visit the specialist if the disorder persists.
12) Reduce the causes.
In general, your eyes get tired when you have to fix an object for a long time, such as the road, a computer screen or a book. Try to reduce the time you spend on these activities as much as possible.
If you try to read or work on a project in a dimly lit room, you can cause eye strain. Turn on another light to solve the problem.
However, if you are working at the computer or watching TV, excessive ambient lighting may be counterproductive. Adjust the lights so they are not dazzled.
13) He rested his gaze.
To reduce eye strain, you must rest your eyes. To do this you can use the 20-6-20 rules. Every 20 minutes look up and try to observe an object placed at 6 meters for 20 seconds. Repeat this exercise every 20 minutes while working on objects at close range.
14) Change glasses lenses.
If you suffer from eyestrain, perhaps your prescription lenses are no longer suitable. Make an appointment at the eye clinic and tell the doctor about the problems you are experiencing. You may prescribe new lenses or recommend a pair of glasses to wear when you work. In this way, you limit the stress to which you subject the view while working on the computer or read at close range.
15) Make changes to the work environment.
When working at the computer, it is very easy to strain your eyes. The screen should be about 60 cm away; moreover, it should be positioned slightly below eye level, following the natural line of sight.
You should keep the monitor clean because dust, dirt or fingerprints on the surface strain your eyes.
Use a microfiber cloth and a specific liquid to clean the monitors and turn them off before cleaning.
